AC won’t cool in Boise — what to check first

Hot afternoon in the Treasure Valley and the house is still warm. Before you start hunting videos or poking at the outdoor unit, run through a few safe checks. This is not a diagnosis guarantee — it’s the stuff that often saves a truck roll, and the line where you should stop and call.

1. Thermostat basics

  • Set to Cool (not Off / Heat / Auto if Auto is confusing the system).
  • Fan on Auto, setpoint a few degrees below the room reading.
  • If it’s battery-powered, weak batteries can make the display look fine while the call for cool fails — fresh batteries are cheap insurance.

2. Power to the system

  • Confirm the air handler / furnace switch (looks like a light switch near the indoor unit) is On.
  • Check the breakers labeled air conditioner / condenser and air handler — if one is tripped, reset once. If it trips again, stop and call.

3. Filter and outdoor airflow

A clogged filter starves the system of air and can leave you with warm supply air or ice on the indoor coil. Pull the filter and hold it to a light — if you can’t see through it, replace it with the correct size. Outside, clear grass, leaves, and anything pressed against the condenser so air can move. Leave a few feet of clearance; don’t cover it with a tarp while it’s trying to run.

Stop here if: you smell electrical burning, see smoke from the outdoor unit, hear grinding metal, see ice on the lines or coil (turn the system Off — not just up on the thermostat — and call), or the breaker keeps tripping. Don’t chip ice off with tools, and don’t keep cycling power hoping it “learns.”

4. What I look for when I arrive

On a no-cool call I start with safety and power, then thermostat setup, airflow, outdoor fan and compressor operation, refrigerant circuit clues, and condensate / drain issues when they matter. You’ll get a clear explanation and an upfront price before work starts — same standard as any other job.
